My Story

My name is Keshia Thomas, and I am a proud, lifelong resident of Fresno. I am also a 1991 Iota Phi Lambda Debutante. For the past 15 years, I have dedicated my career to education—a field that has shaped my life, values, and vision for the future of our community.
I owe my success to education. I was blessed with parents who never questioned whether I would attend college—it was always an expectation. Though I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth, education became the foundation of a meaningful career and the stability that has allowed me to pass along those same values to my children and the many students I’ve taught and mentored.
These experiences have led me to pursue a greater calling: serving our entire community through public service. I am running for Fresno City Council in District 3 to advocate for families, neighborhoods, and youth throughout our city—especially in areas that have too often been overlooked.
Before beginning my career in education, I became a licensed cosmetologist through a vocational training program. Wanting more, I entered the retail grocery industry, where I became a Journeyman Cashier and Supervisor. During this time, I attended college, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s Degree in Education, followed by a teaching credential that allowed me to pursue my true passion—teaching.
I began my education career teaching Algebra and Geometry at a local charter school and later joined Fresno Unified as a 7th–8th grade math teacher. I’ve also held leadership roles, including Director of a Careers Program helping students transition from high school into the workforce. This work inspired me to earn my Administrative Credential and serve as a Vice Principal—one of the most impactful and rewarding chapters of my life.
I later returned to the classroom to be more present for my youngest son, where I continue to find joy and purpose in directly supporting students.
Outside the classroom, I am committed to community service. I serve as Assistant Director of the Homeless Ministry through the Women’s Missionary Union, preparing and serving meals—a tradition I began more than 25 years ago with my grandmother, Jimmie Echols, a beloved Edison High School retiree. I also serve as Assistant Director of Children’s Church at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, where I have been a lifelong member.
I am the proud mother of three incredible children and a grandmother to one amazing grandson. My daughter, Lechet, is a college graduate and the mother of my grandson, Robert Jr. She is married to Robert Golden, an Edison High School and college graduate who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. My son C.J. is a proud Edison Tiger and a college freshman. My youngest, Jacob, is just beginning middle school.
What inspires me most are my children and my students. They are my daily motivation to work harder, lead with integrity, and strive for excellence as a lifelong learner, educator, and now as a candidate for public office. I am running for Fresno City Council District 3 to bring that same dedication, lived experience, and community-first mindset to City Hall.
